Description and Notes:
According to Drawing Instruments, 1580-1980, by M. Hambly, W. F. Stanley became a specialist scale maker from 1856.
This set consists of five rules fitted in a solid mahogony case. Four of the rules are flat section fully divided scales of 1/10, 1/20, 1/50, and 1/100 feet respectively. The other one is an oval section open divided scales containing the 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 3/8, 3/4, 1.5, and 3-inch scales, which, as W. F. Stanley described in his book, A Descriptive Treatise on Mathematical Drawing Instruments, pp. 207-208, is "the most useful one" among the open divided scales.
