The fully extended length of this sterling silver miniature propelling pencil is only 2¼". This type of propelling pencil is more suitable to hang on a watch chain or chatelaine than to be used on a drafting board. It is dated to 1902 as the full Birmingham sterling silver hallmarks of the year, as shown in All About Antique Silver, p. 188, was stamped on it together with the maker's mark, W. V & S, which, according to this page, was registered in 1883 or 1909.
