There is no maker's mark on either the case or the instruments, and according to Drawing Instruments, 1580-1980, this type of commonly known as the "Swiss Pattern" beam compass were supplied by most reputable makers by as early as the early nineteenth century, and were still in use way into the first half of the twentieth century, therefore it is difficult dating it precisely. However, because the components of this set are fitted in a solid mahogany box, which is unlikely to be seen in the twentieth century examples, it might be dated to the late nineteenth century.
