This type of Pocket compass is referred to as "Swiss Pattern Pocket Compass," and it has been described in 1878 in A Descriptive Treatise On Mathematical Drawing Instruments by W. F. Stanley as "... were very popular in this country a few years since. They were principally of Swiss and French manufacture; the form is rather more elegant, but in most respects similar to our [English] Napier compasses, excepting that the swivel joints are made on the same plane as the head joint, instead of at right angles to it."
